When I wrote about this topic years ago, I argued that religion was a virus of the mind, but that politics was the bigger problem — that divisions driven by tribal political loyalty were doing more damage to the world than any church. I still believe the first half. I was wildly, embarrassingly optimistic about the second.
Bill Gates, already a transformative figure in the software industry, continues to strive for global change through his foundation’s efforts to eradicate polio and malaria. His focus has also expanded to include the climate crisis.
As the world gets into bigger and bigger trouble I find myself searching for, reading and recommending books I feel can help us all understand what the issues are exactly, why are the things the way they are, how did they get there and what can be done to undo some of the damage.
